Preap Sovath was born in 25 may 1975 during the evacuation of
citizens by the Khmer Rouge Army of the Pol Pot Regime (1975-1979). His mother
delivered him at nighttime under a tree called Snay; therefore, he was
named after that tree “Snay”. After that night, Sovath’s mother had to continue
walking with other villagers to Trapeang Sla for three days. Sovath’s father
was killed by the Khmer Rouge Army in 1977. Later, Sovath and his mother moved
to live in the Kaoh Thum District (Kandal Province). His mother went
to work at the collective farms every day while he grew up in a child center.
In 1982, Sovath and his mother moved to live in Phnom Penh.
At first, they lived on the street. His mother then became a soldier and
continued to study. She worked very hard to send him to school and he
eventually graduated from high school in 1991 and continued to study Bachelor
of Law and Economic at the University of Law and Economic.
Career
Sovath's career as a singer started in the 1990s. He released
his first song in the early '90s with female singer Touch Sreynich. In 1992, he
became a soldier at the Political Commissioner. He worked during the daytime
and sang at a restaurant and bar at nighttime. In 1997, he became a singer
for Raksmey Hang Meas Production.
Initially, he did not want to be a famous singer but liked to sing.
